Bifactor approximation for location routing with vehicle and facility capacities

Location Routing is a fundamental planning problem in logistics, which strategic location decisions on the placement of facilities (depots, distribution centers, warehouses etc.) are taken based accurate estimates operational routing costs. We present an approximation algorithm, i.e., algorithm with proven worst-case guarantees both terms running time and solution quality, for general capacitated version this problem, vehicles capacitated. Before, such algorithms were only known special case where uncapacitated or their capacities can be extended arbitrarily at linear cost. Previously established lower bounds that to approximate optimal value well off by arbitrary factor case. show issue overcome bifactor may slightly exceed facility adjustable, small fraction vehicle capacity while approximating cost constant factor. In addition these guarantees, we also assess practical performance our comprehensive computational study, showing approach allows efficient computation near-optimal solutions instance sizes beyond reach current state-of-the-art heuristics.
